General Questions
01. What is a Student visa?
The UK Student visa is a form of visa designed for individuals from around the world who wish to pursue their studies in the United Kingdom. It offers a fantastic opportunity for international students to experience high-quality education and immerse themselves in the vibrant British culture.
To apply for a UK Student visa, prospective students must have received an offer of admission from a recognised UK educational institution. They must also demonstrate sufficient funds to cover their tuition fees, living expenses, and return travel. Additionally, applicants are required to meet certain English language proficiency requirements.
Once granted a Student visa, individuals can stay in the UK for the duration of their course. They may also be eligible to work part-time during their studies, providing an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and support their financial needs.
The UK Student visa not only opens doors to excellent academic opportunities but also allows students to explore the rich history, diverse landscapes, and cultural offerings of the United Kingdom. It is an exciting pathway for international students to expand their horizons and achieve their educational goals in a dynamic and welcoming environment.
02. What are the requirements of a Student visa?
The Home Office has stringent requirements for applicants seeking to gain a Student visa. While each applicant’s situation may differ slightly, the requirements can be summarised as follows:
- You meet the suitability requirements – good immigration history and acceptable criminal record.
- You have been issued with a valid Confirmation of Studies (CAS) by a Home Office approved university/college.
- You are applying no more than 6 months before the start date of your course.
- You will be studying on a course which meets Home Office specifications.
- You have enough money in your bank account to pay your course fees and at least £1023 per month for living expenses, for a period of 9 months.
- You have English language skills to a minimum of level B2.
Please note that the specific requirements for the UK Student visa can vary and are subject to change. It’s always a good idea to get professional advice before starting your application.
03. What evidence do I need to provide for a Student visa?
At a minimum you will need to provide the following evidence as part of your application. Your lawyer will advise of any further documents you need to supply to enhance the quality of your application.
- Your passport
- A Confirmation of Studies from your university/college
- Certificates of your current qualifications
- Bank statements/other evidence of how you are financing your studies
- English language test certificate
- An ATAS certificate, if your course and nationality require
- A valid TB certificate, if required
04. Can my family accompany me on a Student visa?
Yes, under certain circumstances, your family may be able to accompany you to the UK on a Student visa. If you are enrolled in a full-time postgraduate course lasting nine months or longer, your spouse/partner and dependent children may be eligible to apply for a dependant visa to join you. However, there are specific financial requirements that must be met, and each family member will need to submit their own visa application. It’s important to thoroughly review the UK government’s immigration guidelines for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding family members accompanying you on a Student visa.
05. What is the cost of a Student visa?
The application fee for a UK Student visa depends on your situation, where you are and how you apply. Generally speaking, it costs £363 to apply for a Student visa from outside of the UK, and £490 to extend or switch to this visa from within the UK. Additionally, you may need to pay the immigration healthcare surcharge of £624 per year as part of your application. Your lawyer will advise you of the total Home Office fees at the outset of our work with you, so you can ensure you have the funds available at the point of submitting your application.
06.How long does it take the Home Office to process my application?
The processing time for a UK Student visa can vary. However, it typically takes around 3 weeks (15 working days) from the date you submit your application if you are outside the UK, or 8 weeks from within the UK. Processing times can be longer during peak periods or if additional documentation is required. Please note that the earliest you can apply for this visa is 6 months before your course starts if you are outside the UK, or 3 months before your course start date if you are already in the UK.
07. How can you help me with my Student visa?
We offer a comprehensive range of services to assist with your UK Student visa application. This includes a free initial consultation, detailed advice for your personal immigration lawyer, evidence checklist and document collection, application preparation and submission, handling interactions with immigration authorities, and guidance on visa decision and next steps. We aim to make the visa application process as smooth and stress-free as possible for you.
08. What if my Student visa application is refused?
If your UK Student visa application is refused, it could be due to various reasons, such as errors in the application form, misunderstanding Home Office guidelines, not evidencing that you are a ‘genuine’ student, not meeting financial requirements, or applying at the wrong time.
If your application is refused, review the Refusal Notice from the Home Office which describes the reasons your application has been denied. Most importantly, seek professional advice from an immigration lawyer to understand your options and increase your chances of success.
